When it isn't working
Say so early, in writing, and say exactly what has to change by when. Most problems are unclear expectations, not bad people, and they fix themselves once written down. Two written warnings, then a plain talk about whether this is working.
If someone goes quiet, do not assume the worst: typhoons, power cuts and family emergencies are real in the Philippines. Message once, wait a day, message again. If it is over, give the notice the agreement promises, pay every hour worked, and say thank you. Never disappear yourself. The Filipino virtual assistant community is small and well connected; how you end one hire decides how easily you make the next.
Do this today: if something is bothering you, write it down in three lines and send it this week.
